Player Skill & Win Streak

CrossWordy tracks two different kinds of progress: Player Skill and Win Streak.

They measure different things. Your Win Streak shows how many puzzles you have solved in a row, while Player Skill reflects the quality of your solving performance over time.

What is Player Skill?

Player Skill is a moving score from 0 to 100.

Efficient solves can raise it, while a tougher result can leave it unchanged or reduce it slightly if that puzzle score is below your established level.

The aim is to give you a longer-term measure of how strongly you are solving rather than simply counting wins.

What is a Win Streak?

Your Win Streak counts how many puzzles you have solved consecutively.

It is separate from Player Skill, so the two scores tell you different things:

  • Win Streak rewards consistency.
  • Player Skill reflects solving performance.

You can therefore increase your Win Streak even when your Player Skill moves down slightly.

How each puzzle is scored

Every finished puzzle receives a Puzzle Skill score.

If you solve the puzzle, the more guesses you have left when you finish, the higher your score.

A quick solve with no help moves towards 100, while a solve that uses most of your available guesses scores lower.

Solved puzzles can score from 10 to 100.

Progress still counts if you do not finish

Failed puzzles are not simply given a zero.

The more of the puzzle you complete, the higher your Puzzle Skill can be even if you do not finish it.

A near miss therefore scores more than getting only a small part of the puzzle, while a failed puzzle can never score above 60.

Using assistance affects the score

CrossWordy lets you use hints and Reveal tools when you need help, but using them affects that puzzle’s score.

  • Hint – 4 points
  • Reveal letter – 8 points
  • Reveal word – 15 points
  • Reveal puzzle – score becomes 0

These deductions help keep Player Skill focused on solving performance while still allowing you to use assistance whenever you want it.

How Player Skill changes over time

Your first scored puzzle sets your starting point.

After that, each new Puzzle Skill result is blended into your existing Player Skill rather than replacing it completely.

  • Results 2–5: the latest result has 25% weight
  • Results 6–15: the latest result has 15% weight
  • Result 16 onwards: the latest result has 10% weight

For an established player, that means roughly 90% of the score comes from your existing Player Skill and 10% from your latest Puzzle Skill.

This makes the score more stable as you play more puzzles.

Why can Player Skill go down after a win?

Winning and performance quality are separate.

If you solve a puzzle but your Puzzle Skill for that game is below your established Player Skill, the moving score can dip slightly even though your Win Streak increases.

That is because the two measurements are designed to reward different things.

Replays do not change your persistent score

Only the first finished run of each puzzle counts towards Player Skill and Win Streak history.

You can replay puzzles and still see a Puzzle Skill result, but replays cannot increase or reduce your persistent Player Skill or Win Streak.

Where to find Player Skill & Win Streak

Open the Game Menu and choose Player Skill & Win Streak.

There you can see your current Player Skill, current Win Streak and a full explanation of how the scoring system works.

Two different ways to measure progress

A long Win Streak shows consistency. A strong Player Skill shows efficient solving.

Together, they give you a better picture of how you are progressing as a CrossWordy player.
